VMware opens vCloud API
VMware has released a royalty free, alpha version of the vCloud API under an open source licence. The vCloud API provides a REST-ful web services API to virtualised cloud resources and is based around the Open Virtualisation Format (OVF), which is a standard for describing software to be run in virtual machines. Using the API, a developer can upload, download, deploy, start and manage applications running on a "Virtual Datacenter".
The API has been licensed under an MIT style licence, which requires that any reuse of the code retains the VMware copyright notices. According to the Q&A on the site, use of the API does not allow developers to call products VMware compatible.
