Unicode 6 adds "astonished face"

863,000 characters sounds like it should be enough to meet every possible need. But the Unicode repertoire was apparently not complete, which is why version 6 of the newly published standard adds a further 2,000 symbols. These include 'emojis': upright versions of older emoticons such as :-) and :P used in Japan. They occupy codepoints PDF in the range U+1F600 to U+1F64F and, par for the course with Unicode, are allocated descriptions such as "Astonished face" and "Smiling face with open mouth and tightly-closed eyes".

Other new additions include the new currency symbol for the Indian Rupee, 600 characters for African languages, transport symbols PDF and three new scripts: Mandaic, Batak and Brahmi. There have also been numerous changes to the text of the standard.
