Open Recall: HTTP 2.00 begins, Overdrawn Android and RMS on Ubuntu

Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news but are worth covering. In this edition: HTTP 2.00, ROSA, Overdrawing, GitHub and Licensing, JRuby, LLVM, MySQL bugs, FOSDEM, and RMS on Ubuntu.

• SPDY in HTTP 2.00 – Google's SPDY protocol is at the heart of the draft for HTTP 2.00. Using Google's performance-optimised protocol, the IETF will now begin taking on the issues raised over the draft, but it does appear that Microsoft's alternate proposal has fallen fully by the wayside.

• ROSA starts steering – ROSA has joined the steering committee of the Linux Foundation's Automotive Grade Linux working group. ROSA has been working on Sputnik, an in-vehicle infotainment system.

• Overdrawn at the Android bank – Android developers will find Romain Guy's look at overdrawing of Android UIs of interest. Guy has published a case study based on the Falcon Pro Twitter client and shows how to analyse, and optimise, display performance. There is also a follow-up which includes an application that demonstrates the problem.

• GitHub Licensing – OSI President Simon Phipps also writes a column for Infoworld and has recently spotted a problem with GitHub; when a new project is created it defaults to "all rights reserved" and too many developers are forgetting to set an open source licence. He calls for developers to publish with a licence and for GitHub to fix the problem. Lawyer Luis Villa humorously rebuffed Phipp's call.

• JRuby Hashed – JRuby 1.7.1 was released this week with the most notable change being a switch from MurmurHash2 to the same algorithm as Perl to avoid hashing attacks on web sites.

• Imminent Clangs – A second release candidate for LLVM 3.2 has the Compiler Infrastructure project on course for a 16 December release.

• MySQL Fixes – Percona says the MySQL bugs from earlier this week are being addressed in its Percona Server fork with the imminent 5.5.28-29.2 addressing some fixes and a follow-up, .3 release, with just security fixes.

• Brussels Legal – Bradley Kuhn has put out a call for submissions for the FOSDEM 2013 Legal & Policy Issues DevRoom. The deadline is 21 December.

• Stallman on Ubuntu – Somewhat late to the issue, Richard Stallman has expressed his displeasure at the existence of the controversial Ubuntu 12.10 shopping lens and restated his dislike of Canonical's distribution shipping non-free software.
