A new open source day in MystOnline?
Zoom A new open source day in MystOnline?
MystOnline, also known as UruLive, a massively multi-player online (MMO) game, is to be released as open source by Cyan Worlds. MystOnline has had a difficult time, originally launched and then shut down by Ubisoft before leaving three years of beta, then being purchased by GameTap, released in fourteen countries and, after a year, again shut down. This led Cyan Worlds to come to an agreement to reclaim their intellectual property and to announce a plan to relaunch the game. Financial restrictions placed that plan on hold in October, and now Cyan have announced they are to open source the server, client and assets of MystOnline in an attempt to make the massive multi-player game live again.

There's no detail in the Cyan announcement on how the code will be released, beyond that of "in stages", or what licensing they plan to use, but they do intend to keep a shared server running to allow future MystOnline servers to join up into a larger virtual world. For the foreseeable future, Cyan is concentrating on their development of fully funded projects such as Myst for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
